And why?!

I'm considering a lab grade Neptune apex system. What are your thoughts? Should I bump it up or go down a step? Different one altogether?

Thanks!

I love my apex. The only thing I can say is if money isn't a problem go big now. If you want to save now you can always expand later down the road

I have a Reefkeeper Lite and it does the job for me. The main thing I like is that the power strips are 4 long, as opposed to being in a box, it takes up less space. As well as the primary system came with two strips, instead of a single 8 outlet strip, so I can split up which strips go on my UPS and which don't.

If I could do it again I'd probably get an Apex, or if I ever go with a new large system I'd get an Apex, but the RKL does a good job.

Is there anything I'm missing that I should really really care about from the Gold system?

I have the apex jr. I got the Eb8 too add on shortly after i do want to add a salinity probe. i would go with the gold if u could. Programming was a tad bit difficult for me but i did alot of research and it was worth it if u need help lemme kno jus did it a little bit ago.

How easy was it to set up and program?

I think it took like 4 hours to set it up and program most all of my outlets. Nothing crazy though since I run halides and my jebao pumps aren't connected yet either. That's the next adventure with the apex.

Appreciate it!

So the main question I think I have at this point is do I care if I have a salinity probe or ORP probe? I don't think I'll ever dose Ozone..

It would be cool to have but definitely not a necessity for me

Is there such thing as an alk probe? Probably wishful thinking on my part lol

If you are not going to use ozone and you test your parameters regularly, it is probably not worth it. The salinity probe does not measure salinity it guesses it by measuring conductivity. At best it may give you warning to check your specific gravity and other trace elements if your conductivity is trending up or down.

Like others have said, the Salinity probe is actually a conductivity probe that will measure total dissolved solids and calculate Salinity based on atmospheric pressure and temperature. I had one on my RKE and it's useful for a quick spot check but I still rely on my refractometer for precise checking and water changes. It's good to track fluctuations and consistency. I care way more about consistency than the actual value (disclaimer: actual value still is important just not as important as consistency imo).

I currently use the RKE and I've gone with the Apex Gold for my next setup. I think the apex has better programmability, is more user friendly, the app is really nice with remote access. To get remote access with my RKE I had to setup port forwarding which is a PITA for us non computer savvy people.

Apex also is constantly improving and innovating. They continually put out new features, accessories, and modules. RKE went dead in the water for a while. They seem to be trying to revive themselves as of late though.

i have both the apex lite and reefkeeper lite. i like the interface on the apex better and they have the 8 outlets instead of the 4 for the rkl. i program everything on the apex with my laptop and program on the display for the rkl. if I get another tank, i would go with regular apex and 2 ee8.

Where did you get this awesome little cabinet you have your cords in? I've been wanting to get something similar for mine for awhile so they aren't all just screwed into the side of my stand.
