COnverting CPR-CY192 skimmer sump for refugium use?

Curious if anyone has input if this will work?

The sump in discussion:
CY192-2.jpg

What I am interested in doing is adding a baffle plate that would basically flood the "wet/dry" section of the sump to just below where the filter pad rests near the top at the end of the unit, and running a grow light on the flooded area with chaeto at night after lights out.

I am running a Rio 2100 return, pumping something between 200 to 375 gph thru the sump. The "refuge" would have an area of like 8.5"x10"x4" of water volume, with a constant inflow from the skimmer zone of the sump.

Is this area too small to be effective, considering the amount of water that will flow thru such a small space every hour, or does this idea sound feasable and even worth spending the time and effort to make happen? I really dont want to change out the entire unit for a different setup, I will never get enough money selling the CPR unit to cover the costs of a new refugium tank, new skimmer and powerhead, etc..... especially since the CPR is doing its job well, just lacks a refuge area that I would like to add to it if possible.

i am thinking of doing the same thing.
i have a few ideas on how todo it. I dnt think its too small i have a hang on cpr refugium and it has a smaller flow and area to grow in. my cpr cy192 is still new in box for about a year.

I've done it, along with other mods.

I actually just super glued some acrylic strips in place to create a groove for the baffle to sit in. I made the chamber just large enough for a phosban reactor, though at the moment it's actually empty. I also have it slightly tilted and then used a file to round out the top of the baffle so the water doesn't shoot over the top of the baffle.

I also cut up the lid of the sump to create a little baffle at the bottom of the 'refugium' section. The idea being if I added sand it would keep in the fuge.

Mine was used, so I didn't have the drip plates, I cut a new piece of acrylic to use as a top drip plate, and left about 1/4 slot at the bottom end for the water to flow down. It is allot of flow, but without the drip plates, it circumvents the bulk of the refugium section, though I still get flow through there.

In the end though I went with an ATS, much easier to clean since all the nastiness sits way at the top and ATS like flow.

In use.

Cleaning the ATS screen.

Although this is 2 years old, still giving thanks to both of u for contributing! I loved this sump system when I had it. If I go back to a small tank in the future I would definitely consider using one again. My only complaint was the collection cup being too small and having to dump it too often. Thanks guys!

did u throw out the cpr skimmer? i just set up a marineland 56 column with this sump but when i go to turn on the skimmer not only is it loud but dose not work properly? it just pumps out water. i was thinking of taking it out and mod the air pump that the cpr aero hang on back skimmer has.

No this worked perfectly when I had it. It went with the rest of the system when I sold the 60g cube and upgraded to a 180g. I now have a Warner marine MF-201 skimmer that is almost as big as this whole cy setup, lol.

wow. i will try todo something close to what you had. have you tried out the intank reactors from cpr? i think i would be perfect for the second chamber once i get the water level up in it
