Is it pretty common practice to run filter socks in sumps, or if you have skimmer and refugium etc. you don't need them? I assume there are various approaches and interested in what others do. If you do run filter socks how often do you change them out?

I don't run them or like them. They are detritus traps if you don't change them frequently. Many will wait until they are clogged to change them and by that point it's too late.

I ONLY run them during a water change and for 24hr after to collect any detritus that gets lifted up during the change.
 
My used system came with one, I tossed it. PITA & really not necessary. Imagine all the good pods in there that get thrown away!

I use them. It help keeps the free floating particles in my water down and my sump/fuge clean. Otherwise there is a ton of detritus in the sump which is hard to clean out because you can't start a siphon from floor level. I change mine out weekly with the water change if it doesn't clog up by then.
 
I use them, and based on how dirty they get, I think its an indication that they do infact mechanically filter quite a bit out of the water.

I change when they are full and the water can no longer pass through them and instead overflows out the top.
 
I use filter socks and change them pretty frequently. I like how they keep the water nice a clean... You do need to change them out to prevent nasties build up. I just toss them in the wash with some bleach...hot water... double rinse and make sure they dry out before next use.
