Help me fight algae!

So i've been fighting this for a while now and it's starting to piss me off. I'm getting hair algae, cyno, and glass algae.

I'm was running a reactor w/ regular Gfo and i switched it up to HC gfo, no help

Running my skimmer wet (skimmer is undersized but new one is coming)

10g water changes weekly no change

Increase water movement. Went from 3100gph to 4400gph.

Decreased feeding

And still no help. After 3-5 days of HC gfo i get algae on my glass again. Cyno in the corners and HA in the corners.

Any other suggestions? GFO gets expensive to keep changing. I have a Reef octopus nwb-150 on the way. Hoping that will help. Im' currently running a Aqua C-urchin

Have you tried hydrogen peroxide? No joke it worked wonders for me, but it was in my FOWLR. No casualties! Took about 2 days to notice, and after a week it was almost clear. I had ordered 35% HP from amazon.

Your levels should get better once you get that skimmer... Will give it 2 weeks at most and I will swing by to test again.

Have not tried it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Forgot to mention that all my bulbs are new also. I also just added 15 lbs of Dry rock so maybe thats causing the spike?

Dre, i hope the new skimmer makes a big difference.

My bioload isn't large.

Goby, 3 shrimp, 2 clowns and a anthias.

Weird thing is all of my coral is happy. Even my recently aquired nem is open and happy.

What are your phosphates measuring at? I wonder if this is being caused by that rock you picked out of the dumpster. Take a piece out and put it in a cup or bucket of salt water and test the water for phosphates before and after you put a sample piece of that rock in it.

On top of all the great advice and suggestions...try raising your magnesium up too. High levels of Kent m magnesium seems to kill algae.

I have(had) 24 nassarous, 2 astrea, 6 hermits.

I have a kole tang currently in qt.

Walt, couple days after starting gfo my phos was .10. Dre checked it with a Hanna checker. All the rock from the Dumpster was soaked in fw and dried for days. I guess they still could be leaching

The tank will be fishless for the next 2 months so that might help.

I was feeding twice a day (small portions) because of the anthias. But now I'm feeding once.

What I did was to buy 3 turbos for the tank, it worked great until the electric blue hermit killed them all. I picked up a 2" lawnmower blennie and he is now a big fat lawnmower blennie. I keep the glass clean but leave the back with some just because he needs it to survive. Dwarf ceriths work wonders on the glass but you have to have a bunch. I tend to over feed a bit because I have nothing but pigs in my tank.. ;)

What size your tank..I'm wondering if I need to step up my skimmer. I'm currently running a Reef Dynamics INS80 rated to 250 gallons on my 150..but I'm not sure it's doing the trick. It chokes really easily and is difficult to run wet. I just ordered a carbon/GFO setup over the weekend to cut down on phosphates.

I'm on ur level Joe. Algae outbreaks all over. Im doing weekly waterchanges and its getting better, but u have to find the root of the problem. Gl

Haha hyper as$ thanks for your pm. I don't think turbos eat cyno though right?

Im over reacting about the algae its not that bad just annoying. I think the spike was from the recently added dry rock.

Its getting better. I used to have 2 turbos in my 30g. **** snails always knocked over my frags lol

lol..yea! they knock over stuff a lott! hmm cyano? not sure never really had cyano lol
