I'm not giving up.

Hi All,

Long story short, my fish got ich or velvet at the worst. I lost two fish within a couple of hours last week so I started down the immune boost method since I don't have room for a qt tank at my place (before you ask, I use to do fresh water dips on the fish before I would add them to DT) and adding cooper as you all know would kill all my corals in the DT. I was starting to feel like crap since I knew my fish where not doing well and I was about to throw in the towel till I saw my yellow watchman goby not acting like himself and swimming all over the place. Well that's when I knew I had to do something... Lucky I still had my 35 gallon running and about to drain the water so I moved my blenny since I defiantly saw ich on him. Thanks to the help of tkh and ddiomede (and the wife's ok) I got a 20 gallon long which I'll use as my QT tank going forward. Below is what I have to start with, how I'll start the process. Please let me know if you should have any suggestions along the way.

35 Gallon (lights, heater, protein skimmer, power head). Already had saltwater with zero ammonia, nitrate, nitrite pH 8. Below are the fish that will go in this tank for the next couple of weeks.
Yellow Tang
Dwarf Flame Angel
Melanurus Wrasse
Blackcomb Blenny

20 Gallon Long (lights, heater, HOB filter without the carbon, PVC, power head) I took 10 gallons of water from the DT and added 10 gallons of freshly made saltwater.
2 clown fish
3 blue/green chromis
purple firefish

I will be using Cupramine and I will also be monitoring the ammonia and cooper levels.

Thanks guys.

Ok so I'm thinking of removing the power heads since I would rather be able to use them again later and not have to worry about the copper. That said for the 35 should I remove the protein skimmer as well, if so this will only leave the air stone and heater in there. The 20 would have the heater, filter with no carbon and an air stone?

A protein skimmer is unnecessary on a qt tank. A simple HOB filter with carbon is all that is needed. My qt tank consists of a Penguin bio wheel filter, airstone, heater, and PVC for hiding places.

Glad you're posting here too - good luck with all of this! As others have stated, airstones are always nice in QT tanks - be sure you have a lid to limit the salt spray though. For the 35, get another HOB filter so you can culture the right bio filter on it and provide some water turn-over. Leave the skimmer on until you add medicine - it's not hurting, but also not completely necessary.

Update time...

Well after a couple of kick in the a$$ set backs, the fish should be done with the QT process by the end of the week. They actually look better. They're more active and have a brighter color to them. A correction I have to make is that I've also got my yellow watchman goby in the 35 G QT. I had to move the purple firefish from the 20 since someone took out one of her eyes (This is my wife's fish and I have to tell you guys, she was pretty but she has her scars now and I have to say she can hang with the boys.). The only filters I have are the HOB ones, air stones, lights and heaters. I can now start the three month count down before I can start to add them back in to the DT. With that said I'll have the following fish which I'm willing to trade soon.

Black Comb Tooth Blenny - Great looking fish but not good with SPS corals. I had a Green Birdsnet which he devoured but he did leave the zoas an all others alone.

2 Blue/Green Chromis - I'm pretty sure they're the ones that beat up on the firefish but they're in with two clown fish which beat up on them.

Japanese Snapping Pistol Shrimp - I got him to pair up with my ywg but that didn't work out. He actually ended up kicking all of the sand bed residents out of their homes and clipped the tail fin on the purple fishfish. This is a mean little bugger.

I have a flame hawk you can feed the shrimp to LOL j/k
Glad to hear your making progress

Jay.... I might just take you up on that... LOL J/K.

Thanks man, I'm still way off but like you said making progress.

lol ive used rock and power heads treated with copper in my reef . yanked a piece out of qt and glued red dragon and strawberry short cake to them with few others and plopped into the reef no issues . as bb would say true story

Not doubting Madjoe, just sharing my .02.

When upgrading my tank I used a 10g tank to hold inverts. I had forgotten I used the 10g to treat a fish with a copper treatment. After a day the snails started dying off and by day three they were all dead when I realized what I had done. Copper is a killer, don't be fooled.
