My two new Pico Reef's

Ok guys, so i have two new pico tanks.

I have a modded 5 Gal Fluval Spec V. I picked it up from Karl. (IcedEarth) It has LED Lighting.

I also have a 2.5 Gal JBJ Picotope with stock PC Lighting.

I have thought about both set-ups for a while and narrowed my choices.

For the Fluval Spec V, I am going with a sandbed and vida rock. I might have to do a custom piece because of the tank being a landscape dimension. I need a longer one that I can work with. (That's what she said.) I debated black or white sand and I did my research on it. I think I will go with the traditional white sand.

I am only putting one fish in here. A tiny clown or a goby. At the max, two fish or one fish, one shrimp. I haven't decided for sure but definitely no more than two tiny ones. For coral, I am thinking a nice torch or frogspawn as the centerpiece of the tank and then some other frags to grow out. Any suggestions are welcome.

For the pico, i am thinking of doing a bonsai pico. Again, probably getting the rock piece form vida rock and I am going bare bottom on this one. I want to put some GSP on the bottom to look like grass.

Here is a pic I got my inspiration from.

I am thinking GSP on the bottom like that one, and then some shrooms or rics on the base of the rock and some torch on the top. I might do a tiny goby in here too or just some sexy shrimp. I still have research to do on that because I want to be responsible about it and a pico has major limitations obviously.

I am totally open to any honest feedback you have about my ideas. I would love ot hear what you guys think, even if you think it is stupid.

Both of these tanks are sitting on my desk. The fluval is sitting on the desk hutch and the pico on the desktop.

Thanks guys. For the Picotope, a small clown goby or sexy shrimps seem to be the recommended stock for it. Now I just have to do my research. From what I see, the clown goby will be fine as long as i have things for him to perch on, which I will. I might also throw the small barnacle in there from Vida Rock.

Bonsai it is for the pico! I can't wait for this! I'll start finding what I need tonight.

Cool concept for the pico. However, I'd caution that the stock PC light won't likely be enough for anything other than softies.

Eric,

Absolutely. I will have to upgrade that lighting if I plan on keeping anything other than softies.

I was actually picking up a frag today from a fellow reefer and they have a LED light that would be more than sufficient for this tank. Hopefully, we can work out a deal on it. :bounce:

I am leaning towards doing the same thing with my 11.4g rimless that is replacing my ecopico on my desk. Was thinking about doing only a pico sized Vidarock bonsai once they come back in stock.

I love bonsai trees and I was looking for an excuse to setup an aquarium in my office. I will be following this, very creative.

So I can't get the vida rock. The pieces I need would be custom and they are not too friendly about that. I called and emailed a few times and no response. I know others on here have tried and were just referred to the vendors.

I'm going to have to wait until they get it back in stock sometime and hope the dimensions are what I need, or just do something else. So now I will just have to get two rocks, a base and a branch, and put them together to make the bonsai effect. GSP will line the floors for the grass effect.

I committed to buy Tinman's Pico LED set for a light upgrade. Just have to pick it up from him.

Tin, I might have to take you up on that offer. I will have to build it. No idea when Vida will get it back in stock and they weren't much help. Plus the ones they have listed are a little too high for the pico I have. So I have to go DIY. I'll find a nice base and a branch and put those together.

Also, I am thinking if I can not find an arch, or a similar scape for the fluval, then I will go with some tonga in there. I think it will look good with the landscape view.
