Need help picking a tang

Looking to get a tang to help clean up some Gha and to also add some fish to the tank. Only fish in the tank is my copperband. Here are the tangs I'm looking at

Scopas tang
Sailfin tang
Whitecheek tang

Also if any lfs have them.

While tangs do eat algae, they often don't do much to control it. I can tell you my naso never picks at the rocks and my powder blue does, but not that aggressively. Kole tangs seem to be the most aggressive algae eaters and are probably one of the most appropriate for your tank size.

Yeah I knew most aren't appropriate for my tank but I upgrade at least once a year. Next upgrade will be either 150 cube or 240 cube

I hear you. My naso started in a 55 when it was super small. Then it went to a 90 for a couple of years and a 220 for the last few. My PBT started out in a 90. My main point is that most tangs aren't going to do a lot to solve your algae problems.

So do you think a kole tang or a foxface? Maybe something different? More turbo snails for sure

I can't speak to the fox face because I've never had one. I hear they are algae lawnmowers. I haven't had a kole for many many years, but New Fish has one in the big SPS display, and it is literally eating algae nonstop. It has those pig lips that conform to the rocks like it was made for eating algae. My tangs both have small mouths so they can only pick a little. NewFish also has a lawnmower blenny that is big and constantly working. Cool personality too.

Don't get me wrong...if you want a tang, get a tang.

+1 on kole tang. Mine picks the rocks all day. Also look into a lawnmower blenny and lots of turbo and astrea snails

I've got a lawnmower blenny in the 30. The blenny I'm wanting in the 93 is a starry blenny. I'm going to do a little more research to see any other fish to add

I have had a foxface and a kole tang. the kole definitely picked at algae way more than the foxface did. I personally won't get another foxface, too skittish. I have also found that a fish never does what you intend for them to do (at least in my tank)

i dont wanna be "that guy" and im a fan of getting new fishes :) but now that your tanks are pretty much empty i think this would be a great time to fix the issue without fish and get params in check . adding a couple of fish to your system is going to increase the bioload and possibly make issue worse .

Yeah you're probably right. I'll have to test the water and see for sure what's happening. Either way have to go to AP for salt today. Believe only things out of line is nitrates and Phos. All zoas are open and so is the leather so I believe ammonia is already gone or at least almost all gone

I don't have a lot of fish in my 150 but when I started adding fish my objective was to get workers. I have a hybrid black tang, tomini tang and a mag fox face. They are all workers and they like to hang out together and nip on my rocks together. I feel I got lucky with the trio because they like to show each other who's better at nipping at rocks so if one nips they all start. Good Luck

Hope your tank is doing good. Need to stop by and see it again lol I love the big cubes. Yeah from here I'll be buying fish with a purpose. I think the kole will do good with the algae and if I can ever find a starry blenny then I'll really be happy

I love the scopas it was the first fish I ever had. It is highly underrated IMO. Once I have a larger tank I will one of the following: Yellow Scopas, Convict, or Chocolate Mimic

I think they look amazing! Just not sure how good they are with algae. If they are as good as the kole then I'd rather have the scopas

Ya if your true motive is algae control I'd so go for the fox face, but I personally just like tangs more. I used to have a fox face and scopas in my 75 for I believe 3-4 years and they were best buds. I'm also pretty convinced my scopas was a scopas black hybrid.

Only problem with the foxface is being venomous and if the wife got stung it'd be a hospital trip since she's highly allergic
