Tang Police???

I am sooo guilty of hermicide. I hate the clutter of empty shells and those poor little blue legs (no matter how fundamentally evil) have to suffer for it. :'-(

I'm going to make hermie the hermit crab with pixar and this post will be your undoing! Get the pitchforks and torches!!

I hide the bigger shells behind my rockwork. I also keep a fresh supply of bigger snails so the hermies can kill, eat and steal their shells.

One question I have always had is the limitation due to how far they like to swim or is it dictated by how much algae is available? I had tangs in my 150 Gallon tank and they seemed fine.

I guess the moral right/wrong is my sticking point. If it is morally wrong then I wont do it. If it is seen as irresponsible then again I wont do it. But if it is seen as commonplace and morally acceptable then I would consider said practice.

If you want to pin it down to morality one could argue that it is morally wrong to keep any fish of any size in captivity.

pretty much i would say what everyone else is saying. You can try a small tang, tomini or kole would be great and be ok for maybe even a couple years if not its lifespan. In my 40 breeder i like to start out with tiny specimens and once i can tell they are too big for my setup they get to move on to bigger homes. im currently keeping a clown tang that is maybe 2.5" but he does seem to need more room so i will be looking for a new home for him soon. I have kept a 6" meredithi angel in a 40 breeder and due to its calm demeanor it was ok in there for a few months until i found him a perfect home.

what if you have a shell collector hiding in the rocks? :) .....
You know I have a 2" blue hippo in my 75g. He/she has been happy for about 6 months now. Lets say overly happy and now that my black o's are finally laying eggs, he/she is getting its booty kicked by the clowns. So I have found a new home where he/she will roam out her days and eat the new owner out of house and home... This fish is a pig and all I'm sending is the left over norie.. sorry matt! I always knew it was short lived with the tang being in the small tank and basically my son loves her and is sad to see her go. BTW I have captured the tang out of the tank and is resting somewhat comfortably in a temp setup until the transfer is made.

My pistol shrimp is ensuring I never have to get larger shells, I thought it was killing and eating some of the hermit but I saw it this morning, wish I had the camera ready, watching him sneak out from his cave shoot the crab and drag the shell back under the rock, I am sure when I get home the shell will be by the rock and empty.

I have a small Kole Tang in my 40 breeder. He is active and healthy. I've had others as well. I don't see a problem with it as long as you accomodate them when they outgrow the tank. I was able to determine when it was time to pass them along when the fish either became skittish or aggressive. I think you would be fine with a Kole in a 65. They don't get too big and are one of the lesser aggressive tangs.
