I have had the coralife 36 watt uv sterilizer for a year now and just was ready to replace uv bulb. I gave the housing a vinegar bath overnight and it was like brand new the only problem was that the chrome film inside the hosing that were the spiral camber goes into came apart so I ripped the rest of the film out of the unit. The unit works no problem ,but not having that reflective film will that reduce the effectiveness of the unit

The reflective film effectively doubles the uv exposure by passing it through the water a second time. I'd still use it even at half efficiency.
