While I agree with what you're saying, I was very successful with tap water in my FOWLR for 10+ years. I never had algae issues, my tank looked pristine, and I have some really old fish (8-10 years).
I use only RODI these days because I'm going to corals and nems, but if I were to go back to FOWLR, I'd probably just use tap. Sorry, I know everyone here probably disagrees. Just my two cents.
I also used tap water when I first started in SW. I did have some algae but nothing more than I have now with RODI water.

freshwater fish are completely different im convinced if u added a heater u could keep some of them in the toilet... and also as long as u keep the water the same most FWF will live.. everyone says discus need soft 6.8 ph water or they die ive always kept them at hard a** chi tap 7.8 with no problems
