i think it does both...i notice that as well on some of my species - i cut a tip or a branch out and 2 grow in it's spot...with particularly obvious results is my TdF...first pic is from Feb. 8th after i cut around 5 frags from it...2 months later is the second pic - more dense but the speed of growth went from ludicrous speed to plaid

yea i know it's completely crazy...before this i had had that TdF for about a year and it grew ok i guess...it wasn't until after i cut it that it went completely nuts...also, if you look on the lower right is my WD...i chopped the top off and you can see all those branches growing from it

i have this ARC Fireworks that i've had for over a year now and i think it's dormant...i'm going to slice a small tip off to see what happens...i believe (and have read) that acros will stop growing in bad conditions and some of my acros have been with me through some very harsh circumstances...supposedly it takes a cut or so to promote them to grow again

and on a related note, i think it also depends on the species...if you look between the TdF and WD is the RMF Red Devil...i chopped it's top off about the same time as the WD and it's barely grown any new branches...so it really depends

Well Gunner, you continue to have the most amazing set of fish, aquascape, and coral combined into one tank on this forum. I literally show off components of your tank (build) to a few of my friends when they are talking about starting up large SPS tanks. Keep up the great work!

i remember watching a video on a coral farm somewhere that said they purposely frag their colonies to fuel new growth.

sorry, gunner, not trying to hijack your thread...this'll be my last post about cutting and growth, lol

but here's a pic of it from Nov. 19. Sorry, it's the best pic i could find but as you can see between Nov and Feb there was very little growth...i then cut off about 5 branches all around it except for the 2 main stalks growing upwards and 1 large stalk in the back...in all honesty, i wasn't planning on fragging it so much - i got a lot of PMs asking for frags and so i did what i could...let me put it this way - in only about 3 days, the exposed skeleton on the parts that were cut had pretty much grown tissue already...in only a week, i could see nubs forming...survival instincts? maybe, or just a really fast grower after being cut but, yea, i'm pretty amazed myself

Yes, Vivid's. I have it in pretty hard flow and about 15 inches deep under direct light. It takes forever to color up, but pays off once it does. Mine was a brown blob for more than six months.
 
housing a niger trigger in a reef? I have been looking to do this possibly can you tell me any issues that I may see of have to watch out for?

Yes, he was tiny when I got him but I've had him for about seven years. I imagine he would be ok with shrimp, but my Picasso would not work with shrimp.
