Brandon and Cecily's 93g Cube

Well Cecily and I got a decent tax return this year so we had a long talk about tanks and stuff and decided we could finally get a big tank again and this time be able to do things right. We will be able to enjoy this tank and be more patient and dedicated to maintenance which has been one of our shortfalls in the past.

Enough of that nonsense.

I would like to thank Bobby Vander Meer for selling us this tank and especially for the white glove delivery he also provided. He was a pleasure to deal with and i hope he gets his hands on a smaller tank soon.

The tank is a Marineland Perfecto 93g cube 30"Lx30"Wx24"H. It was the thicker nicer rim at the top and bottom and the seams are black. The back glass is already painted black and there is a 6"x5"x8" internal overflow box installed at the center top of the back glass. Inside the overflow the back glass has been drilled and a 1-1/2" bulkhead installed. Also included is the drain plumbing with what is probably and expensive 1-1/2" true union ball valve.

One of the best parts of this setup is the stand. Its what sold me on buying this. It is custom made and is 39-1/2" tall and 38-1/2" wide. I like that I will not have to bend down to look at my tank. Also its wide enough to fit the 40g breeder sump/fuge which was also included in the deal. Its one of the things that I didnt like about the cubes is the limited space you have for a sump and other equipment in the stock stands. So I'm excited to have such a large sump and extra space in the stand. The stand does need a little cosmetic work a paint job a door nob and one of the baffles in the sump was cracked in transport so i will need to get one cut and silicone it in place.

An Eheim 1262 was also included as the return pump for the system.

Heres a crappy cell phone pic of the tank, stand, and sump in its temporary spot.

I am starting this build thread today even though ive had the tank for a couple days because I got my first order of supplies for this build from BRS today.

Items in my order include:

Glass hole saw for the returns locline pipe and fittings barbed fittings bulkheads vinyl hose a strainer for the overflow bulk head and to get free shipping i also ordered the screen top kit for this tank and a refractometer something ive needed for quite a while.

This weekend the plan is to get the return holes drilled and install the locline returns.

Equipment List

In this post I will list the proposed equipment which will be used in this build. Please feel free to comment or advise me of something I am missing or a better option.

2x Custom cc-120 LED fixtures from CoralCompulsion with automatic dimming and moonlights.

I was going to go with 2x MP10WES but what i thought was 3/8" glass is actually 10mm which is slightly to thick for the MP10s so

1x MP40WES maybe add a second one and keep them turned down if budget permits.

Ehiem 1262 Return Pump

BRS Dual Reactor running GFO and Carbon

Eheim Jager 250w heater

Finnex Deluxe heater controller (this is a minimum if i can find a deal on a used Apex or Reefkeeper then i will go for it)

100Lbs. Marco Dry Rock

Caribsea Spec Grade Reef Sand

JBJ ATO

This is where im the most torn at the momment. I know i can get an SCA 302 protein skimmer for cheap ive had the 65 before and it did really well. Im just nervous because this part is crucial to the success of the system so i will be on the look out for a used skimmer from one of the name brands ReefOctopus SWC BubbleMagus or similar so the skimmer might be the last thing i buy for the build.

Again feel free to give me any advice if you think it will help with my equipment choices.

Instead of getting an ato and a heater controller just get a reef keeper or apex. They can do both plus 1000 other things.

Joe can you help me with this if i get a ReefKeeper Lite What else would i need to buy to get ATO function on it. Thats one thing i dont like about controllers is all the add ons you have to buy it get so confusing to me.

Thanks for the link Jorge. This is where i have a problem with it. I will use BRS current pricing

Finnex heater Controller $50
JBJ ATO $80
Total $130

ReefKeeper Lite Basic$115
SL1 $70
Float Switch $25
Total $210

$210.... Go with this as you will be happy.. 4 outlets will be used fast vs 8. Think ahead!!!

A controller can do so many things for you.. Makes life easy and vacations without having to worry IMO. I use mine to control my 75gal and frag tank. It controls two ATO's also :D

Bam bam im confused the Rkl plus and the float switch comes out to $290. While I do like the ph monitoring. I guess for me unless I find an awesome deal on a used one I cant justify spending that much just to get temp control and ATO and id rather use that money to get the best skimmer I can.

Thank you guys for the recommendations this is good for my build.

The point is to go automated!! But you can go with the basic model and just do a timer for your ATO.. No need for float switch.. Which can dose 1min every hour or what ever is needed using a aqua lifter. Most use this method as a safety.

Just remember me as you start adding things down the road vs all at once. Once you figure out what it can do.

You will pay more like I did ;)

Awesome so far! Good to see someone else with a 93g Cube! I agree with you on the stand, having a taller wider stand is definitely a must (and I did the same thing, just two 20g long sumps connected instead of a 40b).

Can't wait to see this up and running.

Glad to see another build guys! You are going to love the CC120. Jimmy is the man!

Hi. I am not sure if you have made up your mind yet but I will offer some advice too. You can also use your controller to top off multiple ways. Another option is to use the main unit as a timer for ATO. Depending on evaporation rates and your ATO pump speed you could figure out how many seconds/minutes you would need the pump to operate to compensate for evaporation rates each day. With a little testing/adjusting over the course of a week I have found it to be just as accurate as a float switch. Using the controller this way would save you the cost of a JBJ ATO unit, a heater controller, and a float switch. You can also setup a "if/else statement" for the heater. Meaning, if the temperature reaches X it will turn off a power outlet to make sure the temperature is stable. Controllers help keep your basic water parameters (lighting, temp, salinity) much more stable and offer both redundancy and fail safe. IMO a worthwhile investment.

sweet brandon I like the new tank alot. I just started cycling your 75 that you sold me about a month ago :). as for skimmers I bought the 302 and im loving it. for the price of getting a new skimmer with a new pump is kind of a steal but ive never owed high end skimmer to really compare. I also like the taller stand a lot thats the only reason I dont like the 75 lol.
