What LED to choose?

Two things actually......SkullV- The Cree diodes are only 10% more efficient and over 40% more expensive.....so really they are more efficient but, economically not.

Funlad3- Please keep us posted on how those lights do for you and your aquarium. Sometimes its not how much you spend that makes the product "better"

Thanks again everyone for all your input. I talked with Joe today and placed my order for 2 dimmable units from Apollo LED!
 
Skull and I are are both curious to see how these lights actually shape up. Believe me when I say, "We'll figure it out."

I won't comment any further as your mind is made up, but I would recommend doing some more research about the different BIN and model of Cree and Bridgelux diodes. You will find that the 10% number is grossly understated. A chat with Bill at ReefLEDlights would give you some more insight as well.

Thanks for your leg work on this. It has been helpful to read and re-read the thread...as well as everyone's thoughts and opinions.... Though to be honest I still don't think I know @#$ about LED lighting!!!

That said, I think I have also made up my mind to go to Apollos for my newly started 92 Gal Corner Bow Front. It too is 30" deep with an awkward layout to light. I also like their price point and the fact that they are dimmable...and that I can use the expensive controller (Apex) that I just bought....

Would enjoy sharing notes with you as you get your system up and running.

OK....I got my two Apollo LED lights. I have built my canopy and tomorrow I will be hooking up the Apex and VDM......My question is:

Where should I start? My tank is currently FOWLR but I have a bunch of corals in my nano ready to be put into my 90. I am currently running PC on my nano where should I start for the LED.....40-60-70%

Suggestions?
 
Even if I do not have any corals in that tank yet?

Also, how often should I increase 1-2 weeks? and by what percentage?


I plan on starting by moving a few of my softies in there as soon as the ligths are up and running.

Increase 5% every few days to a week and keep an eye on your corals, if they start to pale out you are providing too much light too fast and they are expelling zooxanthele. I am only guessing on this, but you should probably get up to 60% or so and that should be adequate lighting until you start to stock more light demanding sps corals, but I really don't see you needing anything more than maybe 75%-80% from the lights at most.

Do you ever sell any of your frags? I am in Carol Stream all the time and I am a firefighter in Glendale Heights so I go through Streamwood all the time.
 
I have some stuff in my frag tank in the garage, but with the cold I needed to add another heater cause a lot of the frags weren't looking happy. You are welcome to come take a look if there is anything you want sometime you are in the area.
